In our case, we withdrew our son as we felt that his experience deviated from what we understood to be the studio's mission statement as it was initially explained to us. Two classes were canceled in one month, which was in and of itself understandable. However, the other two classes that month were devoted wholly to an art project (my son drew a Christmas tree) and then gift exchange with no actual dancing. From a financial perspective, my son can color at home for free, but our disappointment stemmed more from the fact that our son loves to dance and was not receiving the consistent professional instruction that we had hoped to take for granted. Even so, we would have walked away from Kat's with a positive outlook and some good memories had it not been for the owner's difficulty with customer service and conflict resolution. When I spoke to the owner to request a refund, I was met with a great deal of hostility and misapprehension, which just ballooned out of control as the conversation went on. As a small business owner, I can understand that the owner has a tremendous emotional investment in her business, so it is very easy to view customer complaints as a personal affront. On the other hand, it is nonetheless a business, and I was not met with the level of professionalism that I am accustomed to nor was there any hint of an attitude to suggest "I see the problem, how can we make this better," which ensures a good relationship with owner and client. We had a legitimate complaint, and I had hoped to be convinced to keep our son enrolled, but instead it was made very clear that we were no longer welcome. Although I did ultimately receive a promise for the desired refund, it involved altogether too much unpleasantness, and for this reason, I would not recommend Kat's Performing Arts Studio.
Kat's takes "the arts" more seriously than the studio that our son had previously attended (he is in the preschool age group for dance). There is somewhat less emphasis on creative expression and movement than on specific routines and pageantry, which means greater expenses for the parents, as the children are expected to perform in a costumed pageant with their many associated fees in addition to the $35/month tuition and $25 registration (though one can decline to participate). Dance shoes and attire are required. We were a little disheartened that parents are not allowed to sit in and observe most classes, so as not to distract the students. Still, we were enthusiastic and our initial experience was positive with an overall adequate quality of instruction. I expect that many parents will be quite satisfied with the courses offered here. Personally, I prefer a different style of instruction, but options are limited in a small town.
My daughter had just loved taking ballet and jazz at Kat's Performing Arts Studio but we moved to Bloomington a couple of yrs ago so we stopped going. We checked out the dance studio's in Bloomington but quickly realized how spoiled we were at Kat's studio. So now we gladly make the 30 minute drive to Bedford back to Kat's studio and this is why. The instructors and the owner really care about providing a warm welcoming experience. The dance moves are always fresh and current and accompanied to popular music that the kids love but that is family friendly. One of the students was pretty behind the others but the group worked together to encourage that student to keep trying and in no time he caught up with the others! The focus here is fun and laughing and warmth as well as great dancing! They have recently expanded not only the size of the studio but have many new classes offered including more instrumental, voice and gymnastics. My daughter says she wants to move back to Bedford so she can take more classes! At the end of the year they put on a wonderful professionally done show at the Bedford High School auditorium that has always been so entertaining that I went last year even though my daughter was not in it. In addition, parents can now sit in on the classes if they like and the waiting area has been expanded. Lastly, I was thrilled to find out that they are planning a weekend trip to downtown Indianapolis in January for a dance convention. When the students that wish to attend are not taking classes they will be having fun enjoying the pool ect. The owner of Kat's has arranged numerous fund raising opportunities so that the students can raise money to help pay the way for students that could otherwise not afford to attend. Just another example of how this family run business really cares!
My husband and I started taking ballroom dancing a few years ago and fell in love with it! Now I am taking tap classes. Kat's also offers yoga, piano, ballet, guitar, music, gymnastics and now wrestling for boys and girls. SHE IS THE BEST!!!!
